Navigate Relationship Challenges with Couples Therapy

Almost all of us have a deep desire to love and be loved, but life is complicated and many of us never learn the skills to effectively care for ourselves, let alone share such a special gift with another human. Over time, misunderstandings, resentments, and distancing can creep in, making us feel more like strangers than partners. At Katya Coad Counselling, I help couples find their way back to each other’s hearts by learning to connect more deeply within our own. Whether you struggle with trust, intimacy, or ongoing conflict, I offer a space where you can feel seen, heard, and understood while developing the skills to navigate love relationship in a more present and heartfelt way.

How Does Couples Therapy Help?

Rather than providing advice, I guide you to find your own answers by helping you:

  • Experience Feeling Heard: I offer a private space where you can express your deepest feelings without fear of being judged.
  • Heal Together: Our work together provides an opportunity to work through past wounding in order to reconnect and rebuild trust.
  • Reignite the Spark: You get to rediscover what brought you together in the first place.
  • Navigate Life’s Changes: You will learn how to more effectively support one another through each new life transition.
  • Resolve Conflict with Love: Instead of fighting one another, you will fight to keep your love relationship healthy and whole.

Couples Therapy Approaches Offered at Katya Coad Counselling
I use a blend of proven, compassionate therapy methods to acknowledge the person that you are on every level – body, mind, and spirit – and help you break free from stuck relational patterns.

  • Person-Centered Therapy – Together, we’ll uncover your emotions and thoughts, focusing on your strengths and unique path forward.
  • Somatic Experiencing (SE) – Couples learn to become more aware of their own bodily sensations and those of their partners. Deeper connection and improved communication are facilitated through a focus on the physical manifestations of emotions and unprocessed trauma. This enables you to respond to each other with greater empathy and understanding.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) – When you feel disconnected from yourself and from one another, EFT helps you understand the deeper emotions driving your conflicts to bring you back to a place of safety and love.
  • A Mix of other Therapies (Inner Child Work, Parts, Reparenting & Grounding) – Depending on the client and their circumstances, I sometimes draw from an eclectic mix of other modalities in a trauma-informed way. These may include inner child work and reparenting, parts therapy, and grounding visualizations. Healing your past emotional wounds helps you make choices that align with the future you want.

Who Can Benefit from Couples Therapy?

  • Partners who love each other but struggle to communicate.
  • Couples who feel stuck in the same old repetitively painful patterns and arguments.
  • Those who have lost intimacy and want to reconnect.
  • Anyone going through major life transitions that impact their relationship.
  • Couples who wish to strengthen their bond before marriage.

What to Expect in Couples Counselling Sessions?
At Katya Coad Counselling I offer a warm, judgment-free space to be open, honest, and vulnerable. Instead of going into blame, we instead introduce curiosity to explore and understand what is going on beneath the surface. Together, we uncover patterns, break unhealthy cycles, and build a foundation of deep respect and trust.

FAQs

Do we really need therapy if we still love each other?

The problem isn’t love; rather it’s communication challenges, life stressors, and unresolved pain from the past. At Katya Coad Counselling, we help you strengthen your connection before even bigger issues arise. Couples therapy isn’t just for relationships in crisis; it’s for couples who want to grow and be the best they can be.

Can we attend therapy if we’re not married?

Many people believe good relationships just happen, but whether we are dating, engaged, or married, relationships take work. Couples therapy helps you build a stronger foundation at any stage.

What if one of us is unsure about therapy?

Even if you are unsure, so long as both of you are willing to walk through the door, that is exactly where we will start. Feeling unsure is a pretty normal feeling when you are tired of the same old patterns. I encourage your honest and open responses and hold both of you in a place of comfort and safety.

Can Therapy Help Us Decide Whether to Stay Together?

Some couples come to therapy uncertain about their future together and questioning if they are meant to be. Not every couple is destined to continue on their mutual journey together; sometimes it is not so much about whether you share love as it is about whether you share enough common ground. When this is the case, I help you explore your options, gain clarity, and gently move away from one another, as needs be, in a spirit of honesty, compassion, courage and respect. Every end is a new beginning.
